Color, fired into the clay

Coelho da Silva clay roof tiles do not feature a modern aftermarket "ceramic coating"; instead, they achieve their premium finish and water resistance through factory engobing and high-tech firing. The color is the clay — it cannot peel, and it will not fade off the tile.

Finishes

The finish is fired in, not painted on.

Engobed finishes

Rather than an added coating, CS utilizes a factory liquid clay slip (engobe) mixed with natural minerals. This mixture is baked directly into the tile body during the firing process. It creates a permanent, non-peeling color layer that resists UV fading and reduces natural clay porosity.

Hydrocasing kiln firing

Premium lines like the Tecno and Plasma models are fired on “H” gazettes in specialized hydrocasing kilns. This intensive, high-temperature firing mimics vitreous or “klinker” properties, resulting in exceptionally low water absorption levels.

Aftermarket ceramic sealers

Applying a separate ceramic or clear acrylic sealer to a newly installed CS roof is generally unnecessary. Because factory-fired clay resists organic growth well on its own, adding aftermarket layers can occasionally trap moisture inside the clay matrix if applied incorrectly.

Living near salt air?

On the coast, natural colors hold their look longer than engobed colors, which can shift under constant salt exposure. Tell us your location and we will recommend the colors that last — and send samples so you can see them in your own light.
