Our story
Making clay roof tile since 1927
CS Clay Tile is the new home of Coelho da Silva — a Portuguese family firm that has been firing clay roof tile for nearly a hundred years, and has never made anything else.
It starts with the clay
Coelho da Silva has been firing roof tile in Portugal since 1927. The clay comes out of the ground near the factory, and the recipe has been refined by people who expected their children to inherit it. That is not marketing language — it is the reason the tile behaves the way it does a few decades in.
Three generations, one family
The company has never left family hands. Three generations have run it, and each one has had to answer to the last. It is a slower way to make decisions and a harder way to cut corners, which is rather the point.
Proven in 27 countries
CS Clay Tile is on roofs in twenty-seven countries, under every kind of weather a roof can be asked to survive. Nearly a century of that is the only test that actually counts — not a lab, but time, on real roofs.
The same tile, closer to hand
CS Clay Tile is the new home of Coelho da Silva. Same factory, same family, same clay — held in stock and supported by people you can get on the phone. When you ask a question about the tile, the answer comes from the people who make it.
Come and see the tile
A century of manufacture is hard to photograph. Hold a fired tile, look at the color all the way through it, and the argument makes itself.
