Ninety-nine years spent perfecting one tile.

Five factories in Portugal, all devoted to the same tile, and roofs in twenty-seven countries. The third generation still runs it.

  2. 1957 The Hoffman kiln
  3. 1982 The third generation takes over
  4. 1998 A new clay preparation unit
  5. 2012 Factory 5, for premium tile
  6. 2027 The hundredth year

What a century of practice puts in the clay.

The clay comes out of the ground near the factory, and the recipe has been refined by people who expected their children to inherit it.

The color cannot wear off

The color is fired into the clay, not painted on to it. There is no surface film to chalk, peel, or wash away.

Nothing in it can rot or rust

Clay is fired earth. It does not feed mold, it does not corrode, and it does not burn.

It sheds heat instead of holding it

The profile lifts the tile off the deck and lets air move underneath, which takes load off the air conditioning.

Twenty-two colors, fired all the way through.

Every color here is fired into the clay, not painted on to it. There is no surface film to chalk, peel, or wash away.

Look closely at the tile.

A Tecno barrel in Rustic Red. The interlock, the fired surface, and the color that runs all the way through it.

The finish is fired in, not painted on
Factory engobing and a high-temperature firing put the color into the clay body itself, rather than on to its surface.
The interlock does the waterproofing
An engineered channel sheds water both laterally and vertically, which is what keeps driven rain out of a roof in a storm.
Tested to a hundred and fifty freeze-thaw cycles
Level 1 frost resistance under the European single test method, on top of the Miami-Dade wind and impact approvals.

Three steps to the tile in your hand.

  1. 01

Tell us who you are and where the project is.

Whether you are a homeowner, a contractor, an architect or a distributor changes who picks up the phone.

  2. 02

A representative confirms the color and the address.

A real fired tile is heavy and it costs money to send, so CS Clay Tile confirms the color you want and where it is going before anything ships.

  3. 03

The tile arrives, in the color you are considering.

Hold it, take it outside, put it against the house. The color you see is the clay, so it is the color the roof will be.

The questions that come up first.

What does a clay tile roof cost?

CS Clay Tile does not set installed pricing, because that comes from the roofing contractor doing the work. Clay costs more up front than concrete and lasts a great deal longer, so the number worth comparing is the cost across the life of the roof rather than the price on the day.

Do you ship outside Florida?

Yes. Stock is held in Palm Coast, Florida, and CS Clay Tile ships nationwide. Florida is where the inventory and the support sit, so lead times there are shortest.

Am I committing to anything by asking for a sample?

No. The call exists so the representative can confirm which color you want and where to send it. A real fired tile is heavy and costs money to ship, which is why CS Clay Tile confirms before sending rather than after.

Is it approved for Florida building code?

CS Clay Tile carries the Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance and Florida Product Approval. Those are the standards used for wind uplift and impact, and they are what a building official asks for at permitting.

I am a contractor. Can I carry this line?

Yes. Choose Contractor or Builder on the form and the conversation goes to the people who handle stocking, installation support and the fittings range, rather than to a homeowner sales path.

Hold the tile before you choose the roof.

The color you see on the tile is the color the roof will be, because the color is the clay. A representative will confirm which one you want before anything ships.
